NOT
GOOD ENOUGH

An immersive storytelling project co-created with LGBTQ+ communities

Good Enough is inspired by Alan Downs’ The Velvet Rage.

It asks how shame shapes LGBTQ+ lives and how shared stories can create visibility, solidarity and pride.

At its heart is a story box — a portable installation combining craft, movement, augmented reality and tactile design. Each audience member steps into a 15-minute journey where personal voices, sound, touch and digital characters bring hidden experiences into the open.

Alongside this intimate encounter, we also envisage a larger standalone installation. This will showcase more of the personal stories gathered through the project, share our creative process, and connect audiences directly with networks that offer support.

WHY THIS WORK MATTERS

Shame is rarely spoken of, yet it affects us all.

Its traces are felt in our bodies, our workplaces, our relationships and our sense of self.

By drawing on the historical knowledge of Switchboard and actively engaging with LGBTQ+ people today, Good Enough brings these conversations into public space.

This is not just art for audiences to watch.

It is a co-created process where LGBTQ+ voices shape the design, the stories and the impact.

WHAT WE ARE CREATING

A prototype story box that can tour to both rural and urban communities, easily transported in a car and set up in non-traditional spaces.

A new model of immersive storytelling that combines dance, AR and tactile design in a sustainable way.

A creative process that centres lived experience and challenges silence with visibility.

FROM SKETCH TO PROTOTYPE

CREATION

CO-

CREATION IS CENTRAL

CO-

Stories and movement are gathered through:

  • OPEN CALL WEBSITE – inviting anonymous contributions from across Scotland.

  • ONLINE WORKSHOPS – small-group sessions exploring storytelling and movement via Zoom.

Contributors’ creativity directly shapes the narrative, choreography and digital characters within the story box.

HOW WE ENGAGE COMMUNITIES TOGETHER

We shape the project around everyday ways of meeting and sharing, including:

  • Digital contributions where people record short reflections, poems or movement at home

  • Small group workshops exploring stories through writing, voice and gentle movement

  • Open studio sessions during residencies where anyone can see and shape the work in progress

  • Coffee mornings and drop-ins where people can chat informally about the project

  • Walk and talks in local parks and neighbourhoods to connect through conversation and movement

  • Public sharings of the prototype followed by feedback circles and discussion

Possible extras for partners

  • Hosting the finished prototype in your venue as part of a public consultation week

  • Creating bespoke events with your LGBTQ+ staff networks or local groups

  • Co-hosting talks or panel discussions on shame, resilience and community history

  • Jointly developing outreach events with safeguarding frameworks in place (with Switchboard)

COLLABORATION WITH PARTNERS

We are seeking organisations, venues and community groups to help us build and share Good Enough.

What partners can provide:

  • Space — studio or residency time to test movement, technology and audience experience

  • Community connections — introductions to local LGBTQ+ people and networks who want to take part

  • Visibility — platforms to share the prototype and gather feedback from public audiences

  • Support in kind — help with documenting, promoting or hosting sharings of the work

CURRENT PARNTERS

We are already working with Cove Park, Birnham Arts, The Work Room, Glasgow, Dancin Oxford and Switchboard, whose expertise and generosity are shaping the project from its earliest stages.

SWITCHBOARD LGBQQIA+ SUPPORT LINE

Switchboard  is the national  LGBTQIA+ support line. For 50 years, their volunteers, who all identify as LGBTQIA+, have been available to discuss anything related to sexuality and gender identity; whether it’s sexual health, relationships or just the way you’re feeling. Switchboard's support line is completely free, and available wherever you feel most comfortable – whether that’s on the phone, via chat or email. 10am-10pm every single day.

OUR CREATIVE PROCESS

STORY GATHERING

Workshops and open calls invite LGBTQ+ people to share personal experiences of shame and resilience. These stories provide the foundation of the work.

COLLABORATIVE MAKING

Dance artists, technologists and designers translate stories into digital characters, movement sequences and tactile experiences held within the story box.

RESIDENCY TESTING

Time spent in partner venues allows us to refine the work with direct input from communities and to test accessibility, safety and impact.

PUBLIC SHARING

Audiences encounter the prototype in both rural and urban settings. These sharings act as spaces of consultation and visibility, helping us shape the final touring model.
